What is the difference between Counselling, Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology
Counselling, Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology all refer to the same process - working with thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Psycho refers to the mind, and therapy means to treat or to heal. The Oxford Dictionary defines 'therapy'
as The treatment of mental or psychological disorders by psychological means: he is currently in therapy.
These titles may refer to different educational qualifications.
The main institutions for training a Counsellor, Psychotherapist or Counselling Psychologist in Cork are University College Cork, UCC and Cork Institute of Technology, CIT. A Counselling Psychologist is someone with a degree in Psychology who has gone on to specialise and train in Counselling. A Registered Psychologist is someone who has practiced Psychology after qualification, under supervision, for a sufficient number of years to be accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
